Kaida and Colin Quick Bits

Colin always needs to have whatever food item Kaida has.  So I can't give her juice unless I give him juice, even if he just finished his juice 3 minutes ago.
The other night we had Wendy's for dinner and when we were done eating Kaida was playing with the Kid's Meal bag.  Colin started hollering and pointing so we gave him the bag from my sandwich and he was happy.  Apparently, it's not just food that needs to be equal.
I said "I thought you only needed to have two of everything if you had twins."
Then Kaida informed me "We ARE twins!"
Heh-heh, that's news to me.

The two of them were playing with the bathroom door which Kaida can open and close and Colin can only close.  Somehow Colin ended up inside the bathroom with the door closed and Kaida on the outside.  JR asked "What are you doing?"
Her response: "I... I'm helping Colin get out."  In that little pause I could tell she was thinking, "What's the best way to phrase this so I don't get in trouble."

Colin has started to say some new words.  My favorite is flap-flap.  He says it when he walks around flapping his little hands.
He said "Up" the other day when he thought I should help him climb up onto the TV stand.
And he keeps saying something like peep-peep.  I'm not sure if that's "please give me my lunch." or "the microwave just beeped and I'm imitating it"  Either way I'm pretty sure it's lunch related.

Consignment Sale!

Oh man, I love the consignment sale.  It was this past weekend, so great!

The sale in the spring sells spring and summer clothes.  So I got Kaida some 3T shirts in case she has a growth spurt in the middle of the summer or for next year if she doesn't.  She has about 15 pairs of shorts that were hand-me-downs so I just tried to match the shirts up to what she already has.  I got smart this time and took a picture of all the shorts so when I found a shirt I thought might match I just looked at the picture to make sure.

I also found a super cute dress.  It's classic and very little girlish but it has ballet slippers and little tutus on it, and since it was $2 I couldn't say no.  Even if she never wears it out, she'll love it.

Colin was opposite of Kaida.  He's all set with 18 month summer stuff so I focused on filling in the 12 month stuff  (which he'll be in for the first part of the summer).  He has tons of t-shirts so he needed some shorts.

I took a picture of his shirts to have with me too but boys shorts aren't very interesting so I really didn't need it.  He got two pair navy blue, two pair khaki, one pair gray, and one pair denim.  I also got some rompers for him - because I love rompers so much I can't put it into words.  He also scored a cute 18 month Snoopy sweatshirt to wear as his light jacket.

Oh man, I can't believe I didn't put these in rainbow color order!

My clothes buying process goes like this now.
At the end of season sales in the stores I buy what I think they'll need for the next year.  So over the last month or so I bought Kaida 3T winter stuff.
Then, just before the start of the season I buy whatever else they need from the consignment sale.  So in the fall I'll go to the fall/winter consignment sale and fill in any gaps in her 3T winter wardrobe.  And then, maybe, I'll have to buy some stuff at full price in the store but way less than I would have needed to without all this!

The sale didn't seem to have as many clothes this time around.  The racks weren't quite as full.  But that may be because my kids are getting into the bigger sizes.  And bigger kids wear their clothes longer and not as many may survive to head to the sale.
Or spring and summer clothes don't take up as much room on the rack.
Either way, in church on Sunday, they said they sold about the same amount as last fall.

Even her cup was green

She wore a shirt from his 2T bin because she doesn't have any green.
This buying ahead thing has worked out pretty well!

Kaida's picture time!

He came out pretty cool

I thought she really pulled off Princess when she dressed up this time
We thought she looked like Puss In Boots from Shrek.

I fixed my pajamas and had to keep trying them on
so she wanted to try them on too.

We made this super sweet playground out of Legos

Here she is the day she turned 2 and a half.  Taking a nap with the puke bucket.
It was a rough week.

Whoops

I just found these in my Drafts folder.  They're from sometime in the middle of February.

She's a genius.

Background:  I've been reading her a poem about a dragon.  In it he mentions his lasering-red eyes.

So today while we were driving she asked me what color the car was.  I told her "Blue.  Actually, laser blue."  She thought about that for a minute and then told me.  "No it's not.  It doesn't have scales.  It can't be laser blue"
Apparently things can only have a laser related color if they also have other dragon characteristics.  Like scales.

Kaida ate her first piece of gum today. And by ate, I mean ate. The entire time she was chewing it up I said "Make sure you don't swallow it." "Don't swallow it." "Chew it but don't swallow."
No more gum for her.

I'm glad Blogger auto saves!

Kaida sings the ABC song - Express version
"ABC, F, W, XYZ"

Colin has discovered the garbage can and all the wonderful things that can go into it.
- His milk sippy
- Daddy's sock
- Spoons
- Pants
- And even garbage!

This morning we drove JR to the Park n Ride and then stopped at the mechanic to have him check our check engine light.  On our way home Kaida asked if we were going to get Daddy.  I said it would be a long time before we went to pick him up.
Right as we got home she was telling me how much she missed Daddy and that we should go get him when the phone rang.  Apparently we dropped JR off too late to get a bus and he had been sitting there in the cold that whole time.
As I hung up Kaida said "Now we go get Daddy?!" and I told her yes.
You know she's thinking "Princess Ballerina Kaida Rose Hagy always gets what she wants."

Nicknames

We've been trying out a few nicknames for Colin.  I'm hoping that if we start calling him other things early enough he won't throw a fit when you call him something other than his given name, *ahem* Kaida *ahem*.

I started with Collie.  Which is sort of funny and may not be a nickname you want in school.  Kaida says Tahl-Wie which I think is adorable.  So then I switched to calling him Tollie after that.  I suppose we could even try Ollie.  That was my mom's cat's name, though, so that might be a little weird.

But now we're trying out Cole.  I like Cole a lot.  Kaida of course says it "Tole" (she even says her own name as Taida, which wouldn't be a big deal except that she introduces herself to ev-ry-one.  So then I have to actually tell them her name because they have no idea what she's saying.)

Another option would be to call him by his middle name.  Three out of six of the men in our immediate families go by their middle names, so it's not uncommon.  So he could be Wes or Wesley.  Or West, because AWESOME!

Then there are initials.  He could be CW like the TV network.  C-dubs for short. (heh heh, I'm totally joking about this part.)

Welcome to La Chez Kaida

If Kaida ran a restaurant the waiter's spiel might have to run like this.

"Welcome to La Chez Kaida, the only restaurant run by a toddler.

If you'd like to leave your clothes in a pile on the floor right there you can seat yourself whenever you're ready.  Your choice of bibs today includes Cookie Monster, My Little Ponies, or Daniel tiger.  You can change the channel on your TV here with this remote and I'll get an extra chair brought over for your lovey.

Since this is your first visit I'll give you a run down of the menu.

You'll notice today's special is spaghettios with a side of macaroni.  But of course we still have our standard macaroni with a side of macaroni.  Both of those come with a raisin to finish off your meal.
We have hot dogs, peeled and cut into tiny bits, the roll separate of course. The chef doesn't believe in ketchup but it is available on request.
Pasta without the sauce.
And lastly we have toast.

Every meal comes with unlimited milk, the jug will be available at your table through the whole meal but we're also offering our new "Cow Service" where we bring the cow straight to your table.

You'll notice your spit-it-out bowl.  When you spit your food into that bowl it activates a "yucky button" and I'll come take it away immediately.

This is Maurice, he'll be your hand wiper today.  After every bite he will wipe your hands and face for you.

I think that covers everything, so, what can I get you started with today?"

Birthday Parties: Buffalo Edition

For Colin's second first birthday party we went up to Buffalo.  It was a challenge to throw a party 3 hours from home but it was fun.

We held the party at the church parish hall.  That worked out really well beause there was plenty of room for the kids to run around and scream (and be away from everyone else but still contained.).

We re-used a lot of ideas and stuff from the first party.  But we did a couple things different too.

For the cake we used the same robot topper but for the gears I used a mold from Decorate the Cake online.
The binary around the bottom said Colin!  And around the top it said Cake!

The cupcakes used the same small gears instead of robot faces.  Plus sprinkles.

But I still used the same awesome cake stand.

I made some little robot center pieces out of aluminum cans.
The displays say "Run program: birthday.party. FUN"  Like it's a program and FUN is the file extension.
Yeah, even JR didn't get that one.

And I put my dad in charge of a balloon garland.

The favors and hats were the same.

And so was the robot photo booth

We skipped the pizza for this party but we had more goodies to nom on.

I think Kaida ate half a bag of cheese puffs by herself.

Someone had to wear a robot hat!

Colin helped with the presents.

Kaida helped too

We sang happy birthday

And were serious about enjoying some cake!

Happy Birthday to me!

And here's Kaida's robot.  Guess what his name was.
If you guessed Pokey you win!

Our plan was to go up Friday night so we wouldn't have to rush around a lot Saturday morning.  We had the car all packed and I was super organized but then it took forever to get dinner and we missed our departure window.  We like to try to get up there by 9 ish so the kids don't get to bed too late (trust me it's terrible). So we rushed around Saturday morning.  Mom had to go to the grocery store for me but otherwise it wasn't too bad.
Betsy came early and helped set everything up so that was GREAT!  It probably would have been a shambles without her.  Thank you Betsy!

Colin's Walking Video

Colin took his first long walk on February 16th.  He had been doing short walks of two or three steps for a couple days.  But this was definitely his longest.  Apparently my kids wait until they're very sure they can do it before they try walking.  He still crawls and scoots, though.  I would say he does each an equal amount.

Bonus video:
Colin being the most awesome Brony ever!  Dancing to a song on My Little Pony Friendship is Magic.

Birthday Parties - Pittsburgh Edition

Colin's birthday parties went really well.

The first was here at the house with the Pittsburgh aunts, uncles, and cousins.  We had invited a couple other people but the flu was pretty popular that weekend so it ended up being just family.
We had pizza and cupcakes and did lots of presents since we also exchanged Christmas gifts. I think it was cute, I even did a little display table on the buffet like all the party blogs show.

The cake
Two six inch chocolate cakes layered with vanilla frosting.  The cake stand is from a set I found at Target.  I'm very excited about that purchase!  The robot on top is rice krispy treats and fondant.  The gears are also fondant.  They were hand cut using a cardboard template.  We tried a make your own cookie cutter kit but the tiny little angles were too hard to make by hand.

Cupcakes, favors, robot hat, fun robot
This is the display table.  My favorite robot was the one on the left.  I think he looked pretty awesome.  He's made out of a tissue box, styrofoam meat tray for his feet, toilet and paper towel tubes for his arms and legs, a yogurt cup for his neck, and a circular piece of carboard that came as packing material in something for his head.

"Robot Fuel"
I printed out robots and taped them over the pictures in frames hanging in the dining room.
"Computer Chips", "333 Ohm Resistors", and "Nuts and Bolts"

"Disks", "Drop Cloths", and "Tools"

Colin's robot hat
I made the robot hat out of felt.  Kaida had a pretty awesome crown for her first birthday so I thought Colin should have something fun too.  Since they don't make many awesome boy party hats I had to take matters into my own hands.  The little robot on it was the same as the robot on the invitations and over the disply table.

Robo-Colin
JR did most of the work for the "robot photo booth" I posted about it on the other blog for the pinstrosiversary challenge. I didn't win though.

Favors
I saw a couple pins that made robots out of candy boxes.  I mixed them all together, found what would work at the grocery store, and made my own.  They are made out of a juice box body, junior mint legs, sticks of gum for the arms, and little nerds for the head.  I didn't think they looked very roboty at first so I covered them with tin foil.  Kaida loved unwrapping them!

Robot cupcakes
These are the cupcakes after 2 days in the cupcake carrier.  It gets pretty humid in there so imagine them a little less melty.  I saw these on pinterest too, but the pin I have dead ends at a picture.  I think these came out really cute too!

We also did a build your own robot craft using sticky glitter foam that I had cut into robot shapes.  They just stuck them on paper however they wanted.  But that required a lot of adult help so there aren't any pictures.  I'll have to find a finished one and post a picture in the Buffalo entry.

Coming soon: Robot party - Buffalo Edition!
