Doctor

10/15/2012
We finally went to the doctor today.  I thought I was doing great by knowing how many days they'd been sick for.  But they wanted to know all sorts of details.
Any fevers, condition getting worse or better, type of cough, and on and on.
It's like, Guys!  Did I mention the two sick kids?  I haven't slept in two weeks.  You're lucky we made it here without crashing the car.
Anyway.  We saw the CRNP.  Kaida did pretty well but it obviously hurt her one ear when she looked in.  Kaida has an ear infection in one ear and her lungs are clear enough that the nurse wasn't worried.
Colin was perfectly behaved of course.  He was more interested in  trying to get the stethoscope than being bothered by the exam.  He has a double ear infection and his lungs didn't worry her either.  When Colin's exam was over Kaida said "Is okay baby, is over now."
Very cute.

10/18/12
We set up Kaida's leapfrog My Pal Violet in January.  We filled in some specifics about Kaida that Violet will talk to her about.  Now Kaida has started playing with Violet more and she's like "Holy crap, Violet likes cheese too!  And her favorite color is purple!  And she likes kitty cats!"  It's pretty funny.

They both still have a little bit of a cough.  Kaida more than Colin.  Colin seems to have stopped pawing at his ears, which is impressive considering we've only gotten about three quarters of his medicine in over the last 4 days.  Kaida has been very excited to take her medicine except for this morning when she squirted most of it in her mouth herself and then didn't want to take the last 2 mL.  I had to bribe her with a baby cookie.

Zoo Class

10/10/12
I probably say "Daddy's at work" or some variation of it 10 times a day since Kaida always asks about him.  Now that Colin has started "talking" Kaida talks back to him.  When he says "Da da da da da" Kaida says "Daddy's at work."

10/14/12
We think that Colin is saying Ball.  "Bah bah bah bah bah" when he's holding the big ball.  That kid really loves balls.

Kaida has two new teeth on the right side of her mouth.  I was putting on her bedtime diaper and JR was tapping out the beat to a song on her face when she started crying out of nowhere.  It was strange.  She finally managed to say that her mouth hurt.  And that "Daddy hurt me!"  So we felt around and then looked with the flashlight and there are definitely some new teeth in there.  Maybe that's why she's been having trouble going to sleep the last couple nights.

Colin is trying to stand without any help.  He'll take one hand off the ottoman and step one foot away from it.  He hasn't taken the other hand off yet thankfully.

Yesterday Kaida had her first Zoo Class.  It was Fur, Feathers, and Scales.  So we saw a Chinchilla (that she didn't want to pet), and a Kestrel, and we got to pet a Ball Python.  She made a peacock "puppet" and a lizard crown and colored a picture.  We also listened to a story and got to see and feel a turtle shell, an ostritch feather, and beaver fur.  I think she had fun but she kept wanting to get up from the circle to go color her picture again.
After the class we walked around and saw the tigers, lions, elephants, giraffes, and "Deers" (they were actually springboks, but whatever).

Today I had nursery duty at church and Kaida went with me.  We think Colin might have an ear infection so he stayed home, plus we don't really see the point of adding two kids and one adult, sort of defeats the purpose.  She had fun.  There were two other two year olds and their birthdays are all within 3 months of each other.  It was pretty funny/cute to see them all interact.  I was impressed with how much more Kaida was talking than they were and they were both still in diapers.  My baby is a SuperStar!

So we had a pretty busy weekend since we also went shopping and did all sorts of yard work too!

Sickness and sizes.

My poor babies are sick.  I thought last week was bad with the running noses, terrible congestion, and occasional projectile vomiting.  But now they're coughing and coughing.  It sounds terrible.  And for Kaida it's that kind of cough where you can just tell that it hurts.  I feel so bad for them.
Colin is a couple days behind her in the progression of the illness so I'm not sure if he's going to get as bad as she is or not.  Maybe it will be worse since his runny nose and congestion were worse.
I've been giving her honey to help her throat feel a little better but it's not some sort of super cure, and I can't do that for him.  Hopefully nursing is enough to help him feel better.

In other news they're both wearing the same size sleep sack to bed tonight.  Colin sort of swims in it because he's not really long enough for it.  The 9 month fleece sleep sacks (assorted brands) are really tight on him at the feet and they all have sleeves so they're sort of a pain.  But the 9 month cotton (halo brand) sleep sacks don't seem warm enough.  I bought these bigger fleece sleep sacks for her last year.  They're halo and have the foot holes for walkers in them.  Colin's feet just sort of slip up inside the holes and it's like a regular sleep sack for him.
Colin is also wearing a size 4 disposable diaper to bed and Kaida is still wearing the threes.  I guess we knew he'd be bigger than her some day.  I just didn't really think it would be when he was 8 months old!

As for the diapers, after a lot of aggravation, we've discovered that a cloth diaper works better for him overnight than a disposable size 3 diaper, and the disposable size 4 overnight diapers work a little bit better than the cloth.  We wanted to make sure we had a bedtime solution before Mom and Aunt B come to stay with them so they don't have to change the sheets at 4am everyday.  Then again he won't be nursing overnight when they're here so that may solve the problem anyway.

Toddlers are gross.

10/8/12
In the car.
Kaida: In my mouth.
Me: What's in your mouth?
Kaida: Boodgers (Boogers).
JR: Don't put boogers in your mouth.
Kaida: Boodgers is nummy!

Today I went to the bathroom by myself.  I closed the door all the way.  Then Kaida puked on the floor.  I probably should have known better than to try that anyway.

Toddlers are funny

When Kaida sees something she tells us what it is.
JR has a shirt that's supposed to look like a Rorschach test.  There are letters in it that spell out Desktop.  When Kaida looks at it she sees a dragon and an octopus.
That's not really the funny part though.
The funny part is when she tells us things she sees in other places.  Like the potty.
In the last week she's seen a snake, an elephant, a hippo, Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, and a seal.  And once she says it, I see it too.

Today she whipped out a "Go Steelers!" without coaching.

In the bath tub she was putting her toothbrush in between her toes and telling us "In my paw."  I tried to explain to her that people have feet, not paws, but she wasn't convinced.

Colin started cruising a little bit.  More often than not he just leans so far he falls over but every once in a while he gets his feet under him and shuffles a little ways.  He's pretty funny when he falls, he cries almost every time.  Sometimes it's because it was scary, sometimes it actually hurt a little, but usually I think he's just mad that it didn't work the way he wanted it to.

Colin stands!

10/2/2012
Colin has learned to pull himself up to standing.  The first time he did it was 2 nights ago on the 30th.  Right now whatever he's pulling up on has to be right at the perfect hieght.  The ottoman is too tall* but the arm chair is just right.  And the storage blocks in the nursery work too.
This came about just a couple days after he got himself up to sitting the first time.  That was on the 26th.  He was in the crib after his nap when he did that.  I think he woke up, I went to take Kaida to the potty, and when I went to look at the camera again he was sitting up!  The mattress was still at the highest level so I ran up to get him and by the time I got there he was pulling himself up on the rail.  Obviously we lowered the mattress that night before bed time.

This past weekend was the consignment sale at church.  I volunteered for the afternoon and went shopping before that in the morning.  I got a bunch of 2T outfits to beef up Kaida's wardrobe.  She probably had enough but if something happened and I didn't get to the laundry it would be tight.  I also got some 18 month winter for Colin.  If he continues at the rate he's been growing he might need some 18 month for a couple weeks before it gets warm.  And if he slows down he'll still be in them well into the winter so it should work either way.  I also got some fancy shoes for both of them and for Colin a winter jacket and snow pants for playing and a thinner winter coat for the car (since you're not supposed to wear a puffy coat in the car seat).  Kaida's coat from last year was big on her all winter and, not suprisingly, it still fits her.

It seems like Colin has gotten a bunch more hair recently.  When I brush it after his bath I say he looks like a little CPA with it all brushed to the side.  In the back it looks like a little toupee because there's a definitive line between where it's thicker and where it's thinner.  It's adorable though.
At church this week a little old lady said that he's adorable and she specifically commented on his ears and thought they were perfect.  He went to Nursery alone because Kaida stayed home with a cold.  He painted a picture of a leaf with watercolors while he was there.  I think that's pretty funny.  Sue, who is in charge of the Nursery, is going to use them to decorate the room.

Kaida seems to have started knowing what she wants more and more lately. And then getting upset if it doesn't work out the way she had planned.  I try to explain new experiences to her as much as I can beforehand so she knows what to expect but every once in a while she'll get an idea in her head that's totally out of left field and you can't distract her away from it.
Today she wanted to go fishing with Pop Pop.  She had her little fishing pole and said Let's go fishing.  So we talked about going fishing with Pop Pop and then she thought we were going to go see Pop Pop and go fishing with him right away.  She got a little upset when we picked up Daddy and just came home instead of going fishing.
After that I explained that Pop Pop lives really far away and we'll go fishing with him but not today.  And that she'll need a different pole and bait, or a fly, or something and that Pop Pop would show her how to do it.  I think she understood after that.  But she was pretty upset for a while there.

Her hair is getting really long and we've stopped using the detangling spray after the bath and instead use a wide tooth comb.  I think it works better and doesn't hurt her quite as much as the regular comb.  I've also started brushing her hair when it's dry because the comb is just terrible to try to get through her hair.  So it's probably time to ger her her own hair brush.
And I think she's grown an inch since her doctor's appointment a month ago.

* Never mind, he can pull up on the ottoman now.

Colin = Pony?

9/12/12
Last night I was trying to part Kaida's hair after her bath.  It has seemed like her part has been moving toward the middle lately so I parted it in the middle.  My secret hope is that her part will eventually part on the "right" side.  The right side of her head, and also the side that my hair parts on.
This morning she woke up and the part is back on the left side of her head toward the back of her head and in the middle in the front of her head.  Very strange.

9/13/12
Today JR taught Kaida to say "happy anniversary."  It's pretty hilarious 'cause it takes her about 2 minutes to say that many syllables but it's pretty close.

She's also learning who goes together.  She know that Grandmom and Pop Pop go together.  And Grammy and Poppy.  But sometimes she thinks that Aunt B goes with Grammy and Poppy.  We haven't gotten to Aunts, Uncles, and cousins yet but this seems like a good start.

We all have a cold so that's making it very hard to understand her.  Plus being sick gives everyone a short temper so it's been a long couple days.

9/17/12
This morning I went upstairs to take a shower and JR came downstairs a couple minutes later.  He found Kaida trying to ride Colin like a pony.  Yeah, definitely going to try to discourage that behavior.

9/20/12
Halfway through the night I put Colin in one of the sleep sacks.  He woke up at 11:40 and peed on me when I was nursing him (serious diaper malfunction there).  So I changed him into a terry sleeper.  They seem to be not quite as warm as the fleece sleepers to me.  He woke up again, like, 2 hours later so then I put him in the sleep sack since it seemed pretty cool in the nursery.  I was afraid he'd be upset about it since it limits his mobility a bit but he slept really well the rest of the night.  He's wearing it for his nap now (still cool in there).  He's sleeping on his back though, so that's the only weird thing.  (Maybe that's why Kaida always slept on her back, it got cold before she learned to roll over so she was always wearing a sleep sack.)

Kaida's Clown Clothes

This morning JR picked a pants and long sleeve t-shirt outfit for Kaida to wear since it's cooler out.  I haven't made the switch to the 2T clothes yet so it was 18 months.  She hasn't worn 18 month winter clothes in months though.  The outfit looked a little ridiculous.  It was a circo shirt, and they run smaller, but it was nearly 3/4 length in the sleeves they were so short.  The pants were a little short also but not too terrible.
When I got her dressed for church I picked out a 2T outfit.  It was also ridiculous but on the complete other end of the spectrum.  I'm pretty sure the pants are supposed to be leggings but they were super baggy.  They didn't really fall down though so I left her in it.  The sleeves of the shirt were pretty long too.
Now I feel like I have to try all her 18 month and 2T clothes on her to see which ones fit the best while she's in this in-between size.
I guess if she's going to be wearing this size for a year it's good that's there's room to grow. But maybe they should have a size 2 and a size 2.5.  I know my child is ridiculously skinny but she can't be the only one who has this problem.

Colin Army Crawls

Colin has been moving himself around a little bit for a couple weeks now, rolling, shuffling, and scooting.  Today he seems to have really figured out the army crawl.

Kaida is learning a lesson about sharing and not leaving your stuff on the floor if you don't want the baby to eat it.

Not that the measuring tape is hers either...

Tiny Posts

Last week Colin pooped out some paper.
Yesterday Colin ate a blade of grass.  He promptly threw it up.
Today Colin ate a sticker.  Awesome. I only found it when he started laughing hysterically after he gagged a little.
Note to self: Do not leave anything on the floor.  Ever.  Also, get that kid some food!

Kaida loves putting words together.  Today she pulled out "Go outside play rain please."  Because she wanted to go outside to play in the rain.  I was very impressed.  But in the car after picking up JR she said "Mommy baby diaper rainin' car seat."  So... yeah.  Sometimes she just likes to hear her own voice.  Like the 72 times she asked me "Watcha doin' Mommy?" while I cleaned the upstairs bathroom.  Eventually I started answering her "Getting ready to throw a little girl out the window.  What are you doing?"

One night last week Colin woke up at 11:30 right when we were going to bed.  He was pretty mad and just kept screaming no matter what we did so I nursed him even though I had just pumped.  He chilled out after that and went to sleep.  Then he woke up at 4 and at 6.  But each time he woke up he would stop complaining and fall back to sleep by the time I sat up and got my glasses on.  He did that 3 times at each wake up just a couple minutes apart.  It's good that he could sleep through after that one wake up, and it's good that he can put himself back to sleep too, I just wish he could do it without waking me up.  It was almost as bad as having to get up to nurse him the same number of times.
In a possibly related note I think if I give him cereal at night he sleeps longer without needing to nurse.  The trouble with that is catching him when he's hungry enough to actually eat.  So I try to wait a while after he nurses but I want it to be before bath time so I can de-crust him after he eats.  I have the feeling this kid is not going to subsist for 3 days on one peanut butter cracker and 3 glasses of milk like his sister does.

Yesterday Colin grabbed my earring.  I carefully pulled his hand away and continued to put him in the jumper.  When I stood up I noticed something in his mouth.  My earring.  I have the feeling this is going to be a very anxious year or so until he stops putting everything in his mouth.

Today it was raining and as we walked to the car Kaida was telling me all about it. "Rainin' Mommy."  "Car rainin'." and then "Rainin' Mister Briggs' car."  So apparently she's been paying attention when we talk to her about the neighbors.  My baby is brilliant!

Kaida is three days accident free in potty-ville!  Fingers crossed.

Kaida's Birthday

Kaida had her birthday party in Pittsburgh on the Saturday before her birthday.  We had a lot of fun.  And sugar.

Aunt Jen, Addy, and Brooke came, and Aunt Jamie, Melanie, and Claire.
Kaida and Addy welcome Aunt Jamie, Melanie, and Claire

Colin and Claire

Brooke

She got a doctor kit, a toy camera, color wonder finger paint, and an interactive elmo that talks about the blocks you hand him.  And a balance bike and helmet.

We played and had pizza and then we had cake!

Her cake was Minnie Mouse with Minnie Mouse cupcakes.  The cupcakes had fruit roll up bows so she and daddy got to eat a lot of the scraps and mistakes during the day.

When we had the cake she ate some of her cupcake and then she wanted the bow from the big cake.  That bow was made of fondant so she chewed it for a while before she decided it wasn't worth swallowing.  Chewed up fondant is pretty gross.  I'll spare you the picture.  Instead here's the miracle picture of all 6 cousins looking toward the camera with no one crying!

On Her birthday we watched some princess movies and played with her new toys.  Then she wanted to eat dinner at a "westahwant" (we think because they run a restaurant in the one epidsode of Bubble Guppies") so we went to Arby's for dinner.

We had cupcakes when we got home and then skyped with Grandmom and Pop Pop.

We went to the Doctor on the 20th.  She was getting pretty excited because we had been talking it up a lot and then she got the Doctor kit for her birthday and we played with it a lot on Sunday and Monday.  She even started to say Dr. Kovatch please! ("Dahtor Tovasch peas").
I think it would have gone really well except that we waited outside for a half hour and then another 15 minutes inside, then we had the student come in first.  45 minutes of waiting and then two doctors was a little too much for her.  But she got back at them.  Pretty much as soon as they came in she said "Potty please", so she made them wait for her while we went to the bathroom.
She didn't like it when the student looked in her ear 'cause it hurt and then she cried a little during Dr. Kovatch's exam.  I think she realized that the real instruments weren't quite the same as her toys and that made her a little scared.
She cried a little after the shot but I think downplaying it helped.  She was just sitting there in my lap while the nurse prepped her arm and then the nurse jabbed her and it took a minute for Kaida to realize what was going on.  She was like, "What just happened?  Holy cow!  That hurt! OWWww... A sticker you say?  Why yes I would like a sticker!"
She is 24.4 pounds and 34" tall and her head is 49.53 cm.  So her percents are pretty much the same as they've been, 20th for weight, 55th for height, and 93rd for head.  Seriously, how does this kid walk around without toppling over?!

Dutch Wonderland

We went to Dutch Wonderland the weekend of August 11th. It was a great little trip.

We met Gio, Mike, and Sevi at the hotel for a whole weekend of fun!
The hotel was really nice and the front desk staff was very friendly.  The only bad thing was they told us that they couldn't give us two cribs for the room since it's against the fire code.  Had they told us that when we booked the room we would have just brought our pack n play.  Screw the fire code.

Once we got there we unloaded the car while Kaida and Colin played with Mike, Gio, and Sevi.
We unpacked a little and got everyone changed.  Kaida explored the room while we got ready.  She went over the the phone in all it's corded and buttoned glory and said "piano!"
Then we went to dinner at Perkins.  Kaida ordered macaroni and cheese and wanted to know why it was taking longer than the 3 minutes and 30 seconds it takes at home.

After dinner we went in the pool at the hotel for a while.  The tile was very slippery but once we got in the water it was fun.

As for sleeping, we decided that Colin would sleep in the crib and Kaida would sleep on the couch that pulled out to a bed.  That is not what happened though.  After two hours of fighting to get her to stay either in her bed or in our bed, Colin woke up.  So we put her in the crib and arranged cushions into a little nest on the other bed for Colin to sleep in.  I thought about having him in the bed with us but I doubt I would have gotten any sleep that way.

It was pretty terrifying to have Colin sleeping on the couch-crib we built him but it was so nice that he went right to sleep and didn't spend 10 minutes rolling around beforehand like he does at home.  The bed was a lot squishier than his crib mattress so he just sunk right in and went to sleep.  I'm sure that's why crib mattresses are so hard, so there's no sinking in.

On Saturday morning we had breakfast and went to Dutch Wonderland.

It was nice and there were a lot of rides that were aimed at little kids like Kaida and Sevi.  We all rode the train and the carousel, even Colin,

and watched a story book show and ate some lunch.  We took a rest out in the shade by the cars.

Then she rode on a couple car rides, a big spinning ride, and a panda ride that she went on without any grown ups!

She had a lot of fun but not having a nap took its toll.  She was sucking on her fingers by 6:00 (which she only does when she's really tired) and dinner was a bit rough.

We went to Ci-Cis for dinner (woo!) and back to the hotel for bath and bed.

Sunday morning we ate breakfast and went to the pool for a little while.  Then it was time to pack up and check out.
We had a lot of fun and it was really nice to spend time with Mike and Gio and finally meet Sevi (Kaida's future husband).

Kaida did really well with the potty.  She wore a diaper the whole time but she still told us when she needed to use the bathroom and only had a couple times when she needed the diaper.
