Sleeping

I don't really know what's going on with her sleep lately.

I've been nursing her to sleep since that's what works. She is no longer able to put herself to sleep. I don't know exactly when she lost the ability. I used to lay her down in the crib drowsy but still awake. I think one day she just started to fall asleep while she was nursing and then not wake up when I put her in the crib. Now if she wakes up when I'm putting her in the crib we have to start all over.

She has an evil internal alarm clock that wakes her up after 30 minutes. I used to be able to go in and nurse her back to sleep but now she seems to think that bedtime was just another nap.

Sometimes if I bring her downstairs and feed her again while we're watching TV she'll fall asleep and then we can put her in the crib without waking her up. Last night I tried that and she started playing. She talked to JR for, probably, an hour. Eventually she did go to sleep around 11 (much better than 1am the previous night).

She slept until 9 this morning. Ideally she'd sleep 8-8 and have two 1-1.5 hour naps. Right now it's looking more like 11 - 9 with God only knows how many naps and for how long.

Yesterday and today her morning naps have been pretty long 1.5 hours +. Maybe her night time sleep is being weird because she's learning how to sleep longer during the day. *fingers crossed*

It's just annoying because she's tired around 8 and she falls asleep just fine. Then she's up after a half hour and we're fighting to get her back to sleep for the rest of the night. It seems silly, like maybe we should just keep her up later if she's going to be awake. But she's tired so I have no idea.

Also, I want to get some stuff done around the house and if I'm spending three hours every night trying to put the baby to sleep that puts a pretty big kink in my plans.

4 Month Doctor Appointment

Kaida had her 4 month Dr. appointment today.

She weighed 11 pounds 5 ounces - 8th %
Was 23.5 inches long and - 24th %
Her head was 41.1 Cm in circumference. - 57th%

So she's gained a pound in two months, a quarter inch in height and 2 cm around her head. He didn't seem too concerned about her growth even though her pecentages are jumping all over the place.
She looks healthy so, as alarming as the measurements are, I'm just going to go along with it. She's a small baby. She was small when she was born and she's just continuing that trend.

She had two more shots and the oral vaccine today. She didn't scream nearly as much as she did last time. Probably because JR was there and I wanted him to see how awful it was so it actually wasn't awful at all. Or maybe she's thrown way more fits like that since then so now I'm used to them.

He said we can wait to start solid food until she shows some interest and starts seeming hungry. Like if she's waking up to nurse in the middle of the night. She did that for a little bit over Thanksgiving but I'm pretty much discounting anything that happened at Thanksgiving since we got so completely off schedule.

He did seem a little concerned that she's not rolling over yet so he prescribed more tummy time. Oh boy!

I'm so happy when I wake up!

I think my hands are delicious so Grammy thought she'd have a taste too.

Big Week!

We've had a pretty big week here in the Hagy household.
Thanksgiving was here last Thursday and Grammy and Poppy came in late Wednesday night. I'm pretty sure Kaida knew they were coming 'cause she was wide awake when they got here at 10pm.

Grandmom, Pop Pop, and Uncle Randy came in the afternoon and stayed for dinner. She didn't nap much all day but was pretty good while we ate dinner and then had her bath and went to bed pretty easily. I went back up once for her but that was it.

Friday JR, Grammy, Kaida, and I went to the Diaper store (Happy Baby Company) for their Black Friday sale. Luckily we were the only people in the store for most of the time we were there. And they didn't open until 10 so we didn't have to get up in the middle of the night. I guess we missed some of the door busters but we still got some pretty good deals. And we found some gifts for Kaida for Christmas.
Unfortunately her bath did not go well Friday evening. She started crying a minute or two after we put her in.

Saturday she didn't nap very much again. I think 25 minutes in the morning and then for a bit when Grammy and I took her grocery shopping with us. Her bath did not go well again Saturday night. She just started crying for no reason that we could determine. We had to power through though since she actually needed to be cleaned this time. I'm guessing she was just too tired and started having a breakdown.

Sunday we had her baptized and everyone was there! She wore the dress I wore for my baptism. We think Grammy wore it for her baptism too. It's a 60 year old dress so I was quite worried about what might happen to it. Luckily, it's still safe.
She was adorable and only cried a bit when Dr. Ruby put the water on her head. I thought she was saying "Hey! It's not bedtime, stop givng me a bath!"
We had everyone over for a little party after church and she was a trooper for all the pictures and letting people hold her. Then she passed out on Poppy for almost 2 hours.

I think that nap did her a world of good because she was fine for her bath and bedtime last night.

Today we had a family portrait taken. I think it's the first picture of the three of us together that we've actually posed for. There were some from the baptism but we're not looking at the camera and there are other people in the shots. Hopefully these come out really nice. Fingers crossed.

Tonight she loved her bath again and she's been asleep for two hours, I never had to go back up to her. Pretty exciting stuff! We'll see how the rest of the night plays out.

She's been waking up around 6 to eat and then going back to sleep until she's had 12 hours. We'll see if that keeps happening now that the excitement has died down. She just started doing that last week. It's good that she does, though, because I'm not sure she's eating often enough and this gives her an extra feeding during the day.

She is such a good baby!

3 Months!

We've started giving her a bath before bed every night. I think she wasn't getting enough of an indication that it was bed time. Since she likes the bath so much it seemed like a good idea.

She woke up at 6 this morning. But she ate and went right back to sleep for 3 more hours (actually, I woke her up). She also took several long naps too. Maybe she's just been too tired to put herself to sleep.
Tonight she was pretty good. I had to go back upstairs once but that was it.

Today we tried doing tummy time up on our lower legs. We lay on our backs and hold our legs up in the air, knees bent, and she lays on our shins. When she's on the floor she just cries the entire time. She seemed ok with being up in the air though. I think it really helped that Tonic was right there so she could grab at his tail.

Before her afternoon naps I gave her two new toys to play with. One of the rings that hooks onto other rings and giraffe on a stick. I figured she'd be able to hold on to them. She was a little cranky though so when she couldn't get or keep them in her mouth she got really angry. At least we know now that if she doesn't get what she wants she gives up and throws a fit.

She's starting to really fill out these 3 month onesies!

Jumperoo!

Kaida loves the jumperoo!

But she's a little short yet, so she uses the phone book to help her jump.
at least that phone book is good for something!

She's starting to figure out her hands! Yesterday she reached for and got her bunny rattle.

When Tonic sits by us she reaches for him and grabs a handful of fur. She still thinks the tail is the most important part. I think she may have whacked him in the face once 'cause he's been a little bit wary.
Last night Gin came near us and Kaida reached for her but didn't get her. Gin didn't think that was cool at all and put her paw up with the intention of giving Kaida a smack if she tried it again. I told her no and she went to lay back down. We figure the cat will hit her eventually but we'd rather it be because she pulls a tail or something. So she actually deserves it.

Sleeping has been kind of rough lately. She's still sleeping around 10 or so hours at a time overnight without waking up. But getting her to go to sleep is ridiculous. Now she starts to cry as soon as you lower her into the crib. The past several nights it's taken 2 + hours to get her to go down. And she's exhausted, her cries sound tired and she's yawning the entire time.
I'm not sure if she doesn't like being left alone or what. We're going to try a bath before bedtime. Hopefully that does the trick.
Today and yesterday she fought me before her morning nap too. It only takes, maybe 10 minutes to get her down but that's 10 minutes longer than before.
I don't want to rock her to sleep because I want her to learn to fall asleep by herself. But the two hours of crying really does a number on my nerves and is exhausting.

My pretty sleeper!

I was sitting with Daddy when I just fell asleep!

What's with all the screaming?

Yesterday we were supposed to have a sitting with a photographer. We bought a groupon before Kaida was born with the intention of getting a family portrait taken after she was born. (As far as I know there are no pictures of the three of us together. If you have one let me know.)

Anyway. I gave her a bath in the morning and she loved it as usual. Then I took her out and lotioned her up. Then she started screaming bloody murder. And she didn't stop for at least a half hour. She seemed like she was in pain.

We have no idea what was wrong. Eventually I nursed her and since she couldn't scream with a boob in her mouth she calmed down. Then she slept for a while. And when she woke up she was completely fine.

Unfortunately in the meantime we cancelled the sitting. Hopefully she'll be able to re-schedule us before the groupon expires.

All Quiet on the Western Front

Get it, her room faces west...

Things are going pretty well on the sleeping front. She's been going down without much of a struggle maybe every other night. I left the tap light on by accident the other night so now I'm leaving it on every night. She went down without a peep the first night so now it's sort of a superstition. Maybe next week I'll try turning it off and see if she throws a fit about it.

I'm kind of wondering what clothes I should put her to sleep in. Since it got a little colder I've been putting her in a sleeper, then swaddling her in a flannel receiving blanket, and then swaddling her in the light swaddle me, one arm out.
It seems chilly in her room at night with the fan on but I went in there this morning after the heat had been on for a while and it actually felt hot. I mean I wear pants and long sleeves to bed and then we have a sheet and two comforters on the bed. I don't want her to over heat so I haven't been putting her in the fleece sleeper. She doesn't cry when it's hot in there or cold, so I have no clue.

She seems to be doing even better with her head. We've been putting her the opposite way in the crib and on the changing table to encourage her to turn to the left. This morning when I went to get her she was facing left. So maybe it is just a matter of preference.

She's holding her head up really well. She doesn't flop over when I sit her up on the couch or in the rocking chair. I've started flipping her over for tummy time after diaper changes. She's getting good about lifting her head up that way too. Still no upper body strength. I guess she takes after me in that respect!

Still can't get her to nap in the crib in the afternoon but she's fine in there for a morning nap. She'll sleep on us or in the swing in the afternoon. Maybe I should just pick a time and put her down to see if she'll get used to it and just start going to sleep. Trying to put her in the crib when she looks tired hasn't been working.

Welcome to Kaida's Crib

Well, the crib went a lot better last night. She spent the whole night in the nursery. It's kind of sad that she doesn't need me to sleep next to her.

She has a fan in the nursery, a night light, a tap light so I can see to change her diaper, the ocean wonders aquarium on her crib, and we took the vibrating part off the bassinet and put that in the crib too. She didn't need that last night though.

There were a couple bumps but nothing serious. She needed her diaper changed in the middle of the night for the first time in weeks. And of course while I was doing that she peed on the waterproof pad (again, for the first time in a while).

The monitor vibrated a couple times (it vibrates when she makes a louder noise) but whatever noise she made was short lived.

After sleeping in the swing downstairs from 6 to 7:45 she slept in the crib from 8:45 to 1:25, when she needed her diaper changed, and then again from 2 until 7:45. Not too shabby! She probably could have slept longer. She already had a nap this morning. Fifty minutes! It's amazing how much more I can get done in those 20 extra minutes of nap time.

I've been lazy!

Let's see. Last week Kaida had her two month Doctor's appointment. She was...

10 pounds 5.5 ounces - 50th %
23.25 inches - 90th %
39 cm around her head - 75th %

Long and skinny, big head.

She had two shots and a vaccine that came in liquid. It was pretty awful for both of us. She was miserable and I felt bad that I couldn't do anything to help her.
I honestly have no idea which immunizations she's had now. They said everything so fast and they're all initials and combinations. And the pamphlet they gave me lists about 10 different ones but the ones she had weren't marked. I'm a bad mommy. I should know these things.

This past Sunday was Halloween. I ordered her dragon costume before the middle of the month but never got a shipping confirmation. Then I e-mailed them and they never got back to me, so I called and their voice mail box was no longer accepting any messages.
It didn't sound good so I e-mailed them to cancel my order and went out and bought fabric. I made my own version of the dragon costume. It came out cute (thank goodness) but it's very small. So unless there are other babies we know born in September or October it probably won't get used again. But if anyone wants to use it they sure can!
The company sent me a cancellation confirmation so at least we won't be billed. Oh, and making it cost, probably, $2 less than buying it and having it shipped to us. Not really a good enough cost savings to warrant all that work. Oh well.

We went to Buffalo for Tim and Amanda's party, it was fun 'cause I knew Jodi would make a big deal about her, and I love when people do that. The kids were adorable in their costumes. And of course the food was great 'cause Amanda's a fantastic hostess.
We also went to the Bulls tailgate Saturday afternoon. Uncle Skip gave us some hot cider that was delicious! About half way through my cup I started to feel a little intoxicated. It had a little Brandy in it, whoops! I'm such a light weight now.
On Sunday we hurried home (and made it by 5:30, everything's a little slower now) so we could see the trick or treaters. We dressed Kaida up and took her to see Dave and Lois, Mary and Glen, and Holly and Dave. We would have gone to see Mary, Jay, and Timothy but they're way at the other end of the street and we wanted to be at the house if people came.

Kaida's been greatly increasing the amount she sleeps. She's had several 8 hour sleeps in the last 9 days. The only part of my body that doesn't appreciate that is my boobs. Since it's becoming a more regular thing now I think I'll pump before I go to bed so it's not quite as bad when she does eventually wake up. I'm not sure my supply will be able to regulate to that big of a time off. Doesn't hurt to have an extra bottle in the freezer, but it does hurt to have it inside my breasts. :-P

While she is sleeping longer she's been fighting sleep pretty hard the last couple days. Today I got three half hour naps out of her. But then when JR got home she slept for almost two hours before it was time to go to bed. She's driving me crazy!

Last night we tried to put her in the crib but she wasn't a real big fan of that. She went to sleep but woke up a half hour later and refused to sleep for the next hour and a half. Eventually we brought her back to our room and put her in the bassinet but she was pretty wound up and had trouble sleeping even there. She didn't nap much at all yesterday so she was probably over tired.
So far tonight she's been asleep in the crib for one hour. Hopefully it will stick.

She's starting to dislike tummy time. But I've started flipping her over after her diaper changes so maybe she'll get a little more used to it.

She seems to be favoring the right side of her head a little less. She doesn't insist on having her head turned that way but she does still prefer it.

She loves to be complimented. If people tell her she's pretty she smiles at them.

She still likes her bath but hates to be taken out of the sink. Even if the sink is empty she'd rather stay in there than be laid on the towel. I have no idea why, my baby is crazy.

The E-mail last week said don't feed her with the TV on because you should be making eye contact with baby. They obviously haven't fed my baby who sleeps most of the time. And if you do look at her while she's eating she looks at you out of the corner of her eye. She seems to be saying "Um, hi, I'm eating here. Could you not stare at me like that please? K? Thanks."

2 Months!

Dear Kaida,
Today you are two months old. Right now you're sleeping in your swing because when I put you in your crib for your morning nap you only slept for 45 minutes before you woke up very hungry.
Later today you'll have a bath and we might go shopping at Target and Sam's club. Tonight the three of us will got to the Dive Club meeting because Daddy is the President and I am the secretary.
You've grown a lot in two months. When you were born you were the skinniest baby I'd ever seen. You were also the prettiest.
Now you're starting to get little fat rolls on your thighs and wrists. You still have a lot of hair, some of it is very long. You are starting to get a little bit bald on one side of your head though.
You like to take baths and you like to watch Tonic's tail as he wags it back and forth. You even tried to grab it once.
You eat about 8 times a day. Sometimes every two hours sometimes every three. When you're hungry you stick out your tongue and start to suck on your fists.
Last night you went 6 hours between feedings. You ate at 9pm and went to bed right away. You didn't wake up again until 3 am!
At night you sleep in the bassinet in our room. We try to put you to bed around 8 o'clock but sometimes your feedings don't line up with that plan.
You're wearing size 0-3 month clothes. Although the sleeper I put on you last night seems a little bit short (I think it's smaller than all the others), you are still a very long baby. When you wear a disposable diaper you are still in the newborn size but they actually fit now! They were pretty funny looking on you when you were first born.
You're not a big fan of tummy time but you don't scream when we put you there. You are showing a big preference for the right side of your head. You always want to have your right side down whether you're on your back or your tummy. But you can move your head. You will follow us as we walk across the room. You do smile at us but we have to work pretty hard to earn those smiles.
You really like the pacifier. We say that you're addicted and wonder how we're going to hold an intervention when you don't understand english yet. Usually we have to sit next to you and put it back in your mouth every time it falls out. Yesterday it was laying next to you and you managed to get it back into your mouth without my help. We're excited for you to figure out your hands so you can put it back in by yourself all the time.
Later this week we'll leave you with someone else for the first time (for more than a few minutes, you would stay with Grammom or Grammy when I went to pick up daddy at the bus stop when you were first born and they were visiting). You'll go to Aunt Jen's house while Daddy and I go to a show!
You're growing very fast and while it makes me a little sad that you're not the same tiny baby we brought home from the hospital I'm very excited to see who you'll turn into and what you'll do next!
Love,
Mommy

8 Weeks

I never got an e-mail this week. Maybe she's not supposed to have learned anything this week.

It was a busy week though!
On Friday we went to Buffalo. We left the house at 4:45 to pick up Daddy at the park n ride. Then we went to Babies r us to pick up her pictures which came out adorable. She ate there in the Mother's room (and I left her changing pad from the diaper bag on the changing table there whoops!)
Then JR and I ate at Chick-fil-a and we were on our way. We made it to State Line before she needed to eat again. We got to Grammy and Poppy's at 10:30. Almost 6 hours, but we had lots of stops.

On Saturday Grammy and Poppy held an open house so Kaida could meet her family. She met Uncle Tim, Aunt Manda, Tara, and Ryan. Uncle Lee, Aunt Carol, and Leanne. Aunt B., Kim, and Alexandra. Carlie, and Becki Chambers. Uncle Matt came too, but she's already met him.
Later that evening we went to Rachelle and Joe's for dinner. So she got to meet them and Claire, and Betsy and John. It was fun!

Kaida with Aunt B

on Sunday she had a bath in Grammy's kitchen sink. It was a lot smaller that our sink so it was pretty challenging.

Bath Time!

Later we went to the special memorial service at church since they're knocking it down. We took her picture with Grammy in front of the building. She got to meet lots of people at church too. Grammy had fun showing her off to everyone.

Church

That evening everyone came over and Uncle Tim and Aunt Manda brought Nino's! So she got to meet Aunt Sam and Lucas too.

Kaida with her cousins

On Monday we drove back home. It took a while to get home too. We left at 3:00 (I think) and stopped at Mighty Taco. After we ate, she ate there and then she needed her diaper changed. Mighty Taco doesn't have a diaper changing station :-( but we managed and got on the road.

First trip to Mighty Taco!

We had to get gas in Edinboro and then she needed to eat at the rest area before Grove City. She puked on herself so much in the car that she needed to have her clothes changed as well as her diaper. Luckily the rest area has a changing station. It was quite the adventure!

This week her arm batting seems to have definite goals. She really likes Tonic's tail. She stares at it when he's close enough and it's moving back and forth. She put forth a mighty effort but only managed to pick the arm up and heave it in the general direction of his tail. She also tried to get the bunny rattle. But once she doesn't get what she was aiming for she loses interest.

Yesterday was pretty rough. She didn't sleep from the time we got up until about 7 at night. She took a couple of 5-10 minute cat naps, and slept a little while we ate dinner but that was it. And the little bit she did sleep she would be crying while she looked asleep. Then she insisted on being held all night until bedtime at 9:30. She slept on our shoulders and would cry immediately if we tried to put her down. She wasn't picky about which one of us she was sleeping on though, so that was good. But then she slept fine overnight and seems much better today. Already had two naps.

Crazy baby!

7 weeks

9 pounds 12 ounces according to our bathroom scale today. 22 ounces in 15 days is very good. I think she's still supposed to be gaining an ounce a day. But she definitely isn't fat, so I'm not worried either way.

She's smiling a lot more and moving her head to follow us around the room.

This week we switched full time to cloth diapers. So far so good. Very few leaks, mostly just overnight. That's better than the disposables were doing. She'd wake up halfway through the night and her sleeper, her blanket, and the waterproof pad would all be wet. With the cloth there's sometimes a small wet spot on the sleeper near the leg hole. She still has super skinny legs, so I think that's the issue. But she's adorable in them, even if her bottom is gigantic sometimes!

She really likes the pacifier but she's not too good at keeping it in her mouth. I try to not give it to her at night because I'm just putting it back in her mouth every 4 minutes.

The e-mail said she should be able to hold onto things that we put in her hands and batting at things. She can hold onto stuff. I'm not sure she's intentionally batting at things but she's always hitting the toys on her toy bar.

When she lays down she always turns her head to the right, I'm afraid she's going to get a flat spot on the right side of her head. At the hospital they said turn the bassinet around and she'll turn her head toward us so she won't always be on one side. But that hasn't worked, she still prefers the right side.

All of my babies.
