Rolling Over - The Director's Cut

I posted a video of her rolling a couple weeks ago. In that video she had to be propped just so in order to roll over. Since then she's gotten much better at pushing up on her arms. For the last week or so, as long as I put her arms up over her head, she can then push up and roll over. Today she figured out how to move her arms into the right position unassisted.

Now onto rolling from back to front!

This is houdini baby - Not sleeping and trying to escape from her swaddler

She's really not interested in napping

Almost a full circle

Now she's back where she started

And finally asleep.

Mommy and Me

Blowing very sloppy raspberries

I'm adorable in this outfit

Daddy wearing me around the house.

Holding my own bottle.

Nice

I really like when I put her down and she's done crying before I get to the door. And then she's asleep before I get downstairs and open up the webcam to see what she's up to.
:-)
Hopefully she stays asleep.

Pee

My baby is a peer. Hmm Pee-er?

Anyway, sometimes when you're changing her diaper she'll start peeing before you put the new diaper on. She did this a lot when she was really little but then stopped for a while. Now she's doing it again.

The other day we went out and came back and when I changed her diaper it hadn't been used at all. Then she peed on the changing table.

This wouldn't be such a pain except that every time she does it she manages to get her outfit all wet. She used to have multiple coordinating pieces so if she peed on a onesie but the pants were safe I could change the onesie and re-use the pants. But now her outfits are pretty much one to one. One top one bottom.

The laundry basket is filling up as fast as it did when she was newborn.

But at least she hasn't pooped on the wall like she did that first week we had her home. That was spectacular.

Don't spit on Daddy

No, don't spit on Daddy.
It's best with the volume up.

Bath Time

A couple bath time stories.

When we give her a bath we put one wash cloth over her to keep the parts that aren't under water warm. She usually ends up grabbing that wash cloth and playing with it. And, of course, anything in her hands goes into her mouth so she eventually ends up sucking on it.
last week she was sucking on it and she started gagging. I guess the wash cloth's let down reflex was a little bit stronger than she expected.

I keep a bowl of water next to the sink to dip a cup into and rinse her with. At the end of the bath, after she's all clean, I just keep dipping the water out and pouring it over her. The other night she grabbed the cup while I was pouring and pulled it toward her mouth. So she got a mouthful of water. The Doctor said we could start solids if she stops sleeping through the night or if she starts showing an interest in food. I'm not sure if bath water counts as showing and interest in food though.

She's "napping" now. She was playing with her bib and tried to get closer to it so she was using her legs to roll herself around. It didn't work out as planned. Now she's on the other side of the crib.

She had her picture taken with her cousins this weekend.

This one was the cutest of her by herself.

Sleeping

It's been a week since we gave up on the gentle no cry sleep solutions from Elizabeth Pantley's book. the no cry sleep solution.

I guess I could start at the beginning. She used to go to sleep on her own. She didn't even really cry when we put her to bed. But then over Thanksgiving I nursed her to sleep a couple of times 'cause the schedule was so crazy and we just wanted her asleep. Whoops.

The all of a sudden she needed to be nursed to sleep every night and every time she woke up during the night. That was annoying, 'cause she would wake up after a half hour like clockwork and putting her to sleep the second time would take a very long time. So we knew something needed to change.
Then she got sick and it was Christmas so we just kept going with nursing her to sleep rather than traumatizing her while she's off schedule. I read the book and we started trying some of the stuff in it after new years.

The book says it can take a long time to see improvements. We only gave it two weeks though. I would have been willing to go longer but she got worse about sleeping, a lot worse, rather than better. In addition to waking up after a half hour she kept waking up frequently until midnight or later and then she added overnight wakings as well. Like 2 am, 4 am, 6 am. So that wasn't working for me anymore.

Last week we decided she was miserable and making us miserable too so we changed her bedtime routine and put her to bed awake. She cried for about 10 minutes and then fell asleep. That first night she woke up at 10:30 but went back to sleep within 10 minutes. She had one night where we had to go up a couple times but she is usually asleep within that 10 minutes.

We were afraid it was going to take 2 hours of crying for her to fall asleep. Thankfully it doesn't. For ferberizing you're supposed to go in and check on them after 2 minutes and 4 minutes etc. increasing the time between visits until they fall asleep. From experience we know that if you go in there she gets angry and even more angry if you don't pick her up. So we just decided to go cold turkey. I think we ended up pretty lucky.

So, we have our evenings back. And she's getting a lot more sleep. her naps have even started to improve. Overall I think she's crying less than when she was being nursed to sleep and waking up constantly.

Win!

Videos!

The first video is Kaida rollling over. If she's going to do it all by herself she tucks the one arm under and does it immediately. So look quick 'cause it happens fast! The rest of the video is how she does it otherwise. By pushing against our hands with her foot and getting pretty mad in the process. When she's done she expects kisses and praise.

Please excuse the mess, I was in the middle of switching from the 3 month clothes to the 6 month clothes so they are everywhere.

The second video is her playing with the snail Aunt Jamie, Uncle Tony, and Melanie got her for Christmas. She loves that thing. She takes some quick breaks to watch the TV though, 'cause she's a multi-tasker.

An impressive couple of weeks!

Kaida has had an impressive couple of weeks.

Traveled through 6 states - New York, PA, West Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky, and Tennessee.

Went for her first swim

Had her first shower immediately after the swim (she wasn't cool with it until I put her under the water. I definitely understand that. It's no fun to be the odd man out when you're sharing a shower.)

Started rolling over - Tummy time is going to be much harder now since she won't stay there.

And started sitting up for longer periods. She catches herself and corrects when she starts to tip over

She's also started wearing her 6 months clothes. Lot's of cute things with many thanks to her aunts and special thanks to Addy.

Busy Busy Busy!

Let's see, since the last post Kaida has visited 5 states, had her first Christmas and New Years, and met a whole bunch more of her family.

Christmas was in Buffalo with my family. We spent Christmas Eve at Aunt Manda, Uncle Tim, Tara, and Ryan's house. Then we went to church to watch Tara and Ryan in their pageant.

Christmas Day we opened presents with Grammy and Poppy and then went to Uncle Matt, Aunt Sam, and Lucas's house.
We were going to have Turkey for dinner but by the time we got home it would have taken much to long to cook Tom. So we had chinese again just like last year!

On Sunday we went to Sue's house so Kaida got to meet more of my cousins. She napped for a very long time but when she woke up she let Pat, Johnny, Kim, and Sue hold her.

Monday we were pretty lazy. Mom and I went to the fisher price store as soon as Kaida went down for a nap. Unfortunately she woke up right after we left and didn't fall asleep again until right before we got back. Silly baby. But she got some cool stuff! An infant swing for the tree outside where my swing is right now, a whale for the bath tub that sprays water, and an elephant that clicks when you move his joints.

Tuesday we came home to Pittsburgh.

Wednesday we did a ton of laundry and packed everything back up again. We left for Tennessee at 7pm. We drove to just East of Cincinnati and stopped for the night at a hotel. She slept the whole way there.

Thursday morning we had breakfast and went for Kaida's first swim! We used a fuzzibunz without the insert as a swim diaper and it worked really well. We should buy a swim diaper though since the chlorine would be bad for it if we used a regular diaper all the time. We drove the rest of the way to Aunt Joyce and Uncle Steve's house and got there in time for dinner.

Friday we hung around the house, fished a little, took a walk, and went out for mexican! For our New Year's celebration there were fire works and champagne. It's cool that their house is right on the lake.

Saturday was pretty gloomy so we went to Dick's to get out of the house. Aunt Joyce and Uncle Steve needed to pick up a kayak they had bought and everyone went along (Mom, Dad, Randy, his girlfriend Sam, Aunt Joyce, Uncle Steve, Anthony, JR, Kaida, and Me!). On the way home we drove through their neighborhood to see some of the big houses. They're pretty impressive.
After dinner we packed up and headed out. We were hoping she would sleep the whole way like she did on the way down. We were not so lucky. We drove to Florence, KY to spend the night.

Today we drove the rest of the way and now we're home. Yay!
I think Kaida was excited to be home. She was definitely excited to see the cats. Hopefully she doesn't get bored with just me this week.
